A female lead in Pullman High School’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” discovered a surprising connection to the character she plays.

Rachel Willis, daughter of Mark and Charla Willis, learned that she is related to the Van Tassel family that her character, Katrina Van Tassel, is believed to be based upon.

Set in 1790 in New York state, the play tells Washington Irving’s story of Ichabod Crane, who attempts to win the heart of the young Katrina Van Tassel. Irving stayed with the Van Tassel family in New York during the same time and it is generally believed that the Van Tassels in the classic story are based on this family. Willis shares the role with Keva Shull.

The show runs 7 p.m. today and Friday and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday at Pullman High School Auditorium, 510 N.W. Greyhound Way in Pullman. Tickets are available at the door, $10 for adults and $5 for students.
