Toying with Christmas tunes: Lewiston Civic Theatre revue has a lot of 'Harmoney' in it

The Christmas music of Elvis, The Ramones and Dean Martin, among other holiday hits, will echo off the Lewiston Civic Theatre stage from the instruments of Santa Claus and his elves, who play on stage for “Santa’s Toyshop,” a holiday music revue.

The cast of Santa's Workshop is rehearsing for a Nov. 21 opening at the Lewiston Civic Theater.

Written by Harmoney Jordan, LCT’s “Santa’s Toyshop” director, the revue follows a toy’s last night at the North Pole during a Christmas party. In preparation, toys find their travel buddies for delivery, and break out in song and dance.

Elvis’ “White Christmas,” The Ramones’ “Merry Christmas, I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight” and Martin’s “Marshmallow World” are just a few of the featured songs.

Jordan chose more contemporary hits for the revue, and also wrote the plot.

When you’re writing it, you think it’s going to play out one way, and then you cast out your character, and they bring their ideas to the table,” Jordan said. “And you find out it turns out maybe better than you thought.”

As the second show she’s ever written, “Santa’s Toyshop” has had it’s challenges, such as cast schedules. But that’s how the theater goes, and each production is a little bit different, she said.

The cast of 25, ranging in age and experience, can be found in the audience from time to time, performing with a four-piece band, which remains on stage. Santa plays guitar, while his elves play drums, bass, keyboard and even more guitar.

People can get up and dance and sing and interact with the actors,” Jordan said. “It’s a great thing to bring your kids to, because all the characters are toys, and there’s just amazing talent in the cast.”
