Image: Over 115 runners and walkers gathered Thanksgiving morning to take on a 5k fun run, starting from Indian Hills Park in Moscow, raising $1,387 for the Ronald McDonald Charities of the Inland Northwest. This event, which is in its 9th year, was put on this year in honor of Thomas Harner of Moscow, age 2, who lost his battle to leukemia. The mission of RMH is "to support and provide family housing and resources while their sick child receives treatment."

This foundation helps to find a cure for childhood cancers, which is the leading cause of death by disease in the US. This annual event brought in nearly $500 in research funding. Members of the Moscow Volunteer Fire Department and Latah Sheriff's Department sent off the runners in style, alongside childhood cancer warrior Ivy Risner. This 5k is also held in honor of Thomas Harner, who passed away from leukemia shortly after his second birthday. Date of 5k: Sept 30 Location: Moscow City Playfields

This year's benefitting charity was the American Childhood Cancer Organization of the Inland Northwest (ACCOIN). More than 50 runners helped to raise almost $300 for this charity, which helps local families battling childhood cancer. Safeway donated food for this event as well. Pictured are Cat Harner, Sarah Roberts, and Amy Kaucic.

Image: Julie Sawyer of Moscow, Cat Harner of Moscow, and Sarah Roberts of Pullman competed in this weekend's Couer d'Alene 70.3 Ironman triathlon on the Ironman for Anna team, which raises money for local families fighting cancer. As a team, they were able to raise over $8,000 (with CDA teammate Patick, not pictured). Pictured also within the picture is Thomas Harner, who lost his battle to cancer at the age of two. A 70.3 Ironman consists of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride, and 13.1 mile run.

All three are on the Ironman for Anna team, which, through their fund raising efforts, raises money for the Anna Schindler Foundation, benefitting children and their families that are battling childhood cancer. Thomas Harner, pictured on the sign, lost his lifelong battle to Leukemia at the age of 2 years and 4 months and the ASF helped throughout his entire journey. In 2021, 58 families heard the words “your child has cancer” in the Inland Northwest.

This year's 5k brought in over $500 for the Anna Schindler Foundation, which helps the families of pediatric oncology patients in the Inland Northwest with lodging, travel expenses, and food. The original goal of this challenge was to flip a tire for each child in the US that would be diagnosed with cancer this September: 1,290 (43 a day). Together, they flipped tires 7,165 times, honoring those that will be diagnosed, those that are currently fighting, and those that have fought.

Image: Claire Glover and Juliana Harner enjoy lemonade at the Tommy Strong 5k Fundraiser last Saturday in Moscow, which raised $1,741 for the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. This foundation benefits childhood cancer research, which only receives 4% of the NIH's budget for cancer research. 1/285 kids will be diagnosed before cancer before the age of 19 - cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in kids. We hope to bring awareness regarding the lack of funding this receives, so that better outcomes will occur.
