Escargot is a specialty at Macullen's.
Entry No. 5: Once on a holiday at Macullen’s I ordered that night’s special, sturgeon, the first time I’d ever tried the steak-like white fish. Sturgeon can live to be more than 100 years old and not knowing the history of that particular individual I felt a little guilty for eating something so historical. While you won’t find sturgeon on the daily menu there’s a variety of other species. Diners here frequently start their meals with snails. According to the menu, Escargot Macullen’s, $12.95, “oozing with garlic butter,” has been “a Lewiston tradition since 1980.” A locally raised Porterhouse steak is $35.95. Burgers range from $6.95 to $12.95, the most expensive being the Signature Spirit House Burger — local ground chuck with maple glazed bacon, carmelized onions and Boursin cheese. There’s also a variety of salmon dishes, salad and seafood, including the Sashimi Sampler, $13.95.

Maccullen’s Restaurant is at 1516 Main St., Lewiston, (208) 746-3438
